Nose Aesthetics (Rhinoplasty) Surgery

Rhinoplasty, also known as Aesthetic Nose Surgery, allows your nose to gain a more harmonious and balanced appearance with other parts of your face. This surgery is an important surgical intervention that corrects the aesthetic proportions of your nose and increases the overall harmony of your face.

In addition, during aesthetic nose surgery, it is also possible to eliminate breathing problems caused by structural disorders in your nose. In this way, both an aesthetic appearance is achieved and positive results are obtained in terms of health.

In particular, correction of structural elements such as the nasal septum can facilitate breathing and eliminate obstructions in the respiratory tract. Therefore, rhinoplasty not only improves the external appearance, but also improves the quality of life.

What Can Be Obtained With Rhinoplasty (Nose Aesthetics)?

A nose size compatible with the face is provided. A small nose will not fit on a wide face, and a large nose will not fit well with a small face.

  • The width of the nasal bone can be narrowed, the size and position of the nostrils can be changed.
  • The arch in the nasal bone and cartilage structure is corrected and a smooth nasal profile can be achieved.
  • Wide, drooping, collapsed or hooked nose tip can be corrected.
  • Wide and large nostrils can be reduced and narrowed.
  • Nasal asymmetry can be corrected.

If you want a more symmetrical nose, keep in mind that everyone’s face is somewhat asymmetrical. While the goal is to achieve a balanced facial appearance and create the right proportions, the results may not be completely symmetrical.

Can Respiratory Disorder and Septum Curvature Be Corrected in Aesthetic Nose Surgery?

A blocked airway can be opened during rhinoplasty. Before the surgery, a detailed and careful evaluation is made to identify the structures that obstruct the airway. Most of the time, “Computerized Tomography” is used to determine the damaged places in the nose. The septum curvature, which is one of the most common causes of respiratory disorder, can be corrected during rhinoplasty.

Who Are Good Candidates for Rhinoplasty (Nose Aesthetics)?

Rhinoplasty is a highly personalized procedure. You should have rhinoplasty for yourself and not fulfill someone else’s desires or try to emulate the appearance of anyone you think is ideal.

If your facial development is completed (you are over the age of 17), if you are physically healthy (if you do not have any additional disease), if you do not smoke or will not smoke before and after the operation, if you have a positive outlook and realistic goals for improving your appearance; You are a good candidate for rhinoplasty.

Use this checklist as a guide in your rhinoplasty exam.

  • Were you specially trained in the field of aesthetic surgery?
  • How many years did you receive plastic surgery training?
  • Can this procedure be applied in every health center? For example, can it be done in the examination? If not, in which hospitals can it be applied?

  • Do you have before and after photos for this procedure that I can look at? What results are reasonable for me?

What Are The Preparations Before Rhinoplasty (Nose Aesthetic)?

While preparing for rhinoplasty surgery,

  • Laboratory tests will be done for anesthesia
  • If there are drugs that you use daily or routinely, they will be adjusted before anesthesia.
  • You will be asked not to smoke 1 week before the surgery until 1 week after the surgery.
  • You will be asked to avoid using aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs, and herbal supplements, as they can increase bleeding.
  • Since you will be discharged on the same day or 1 day after the operation, make sure that there is someone to accompany you during this period.

What Are The Stages Of Rhinoplasty (Nose Aesthetic) Surgery?

Rhinoplasty surgery includes the following steps.

1 – ANESTHESIA

Medications are administered for your comfort during the surgical procedure. Intravenous sedation or general anesthesia is administered. Your doctor will recommend the best choice for you.

2 – INCISION

Rhinoplasty can be done with the closed technique or the open technique. In the closed technique, the incisions are only inside the nose, while in the open technique, an incision is made from the tip of the nose (between the tip of the nose and the lips). Thanks to these incisions, the skin covering the nasal bones and cartilage is gently lifted to reshape the nose.

3 – STRAIGHTENING THE CURVED SEPTUM

If the septum is crooked, it can be straightened and the septal protrusions in the nose reduced to improve breathing.

4 – RESHAPING THE NOSE STRUCTURE

In the larger parts of the nose, bone or cartilage structures are reduced, thereby providing an aesthetic appearance. In most of the nose surgeries, cartilage tissue is needed during reshaping. These cartilage needs are met by the cartilages removed from the reduced cartilage structures or the structure in the middle of the nose called the septum. Rarely, cartilage need is met from ear cartilage or rib cartilage.

5 – CLOSING THE INCISIONS

After the cartilage and bone structure in the nose is shaped into the desired shape, the nasal skin and tissue are covered over the bone and cartilage again and the incisions are closed. If the nostrils are large, new incisions can be made where the nostrils meet the lips and the nostrils can be reduced.

6 – RESULT VIEW

Silicone pads can be placed inside the nose. If changes are made in the bone structure, a nose plaster is applied.

What Awaits Me in The Recovery Period After Rhinoplasty (Rhinoplasty)?

If silicone pads are placed in the nose during the recovery period, the pads are removed within 2-3 days. Thanks to these tampons, which allow you to breathe through the nose, patients have a more comfortable post-operative period. It is much easier to remove than cloth tampons and is done in a short time.

If a nose plaster is applied to the patient, this plaster is removed in 5 to 7 days. After the plaster is removed, taping is done to the nose. These bandings can be repeated twice with an interval of 3 days. Rarely, plaster is removed and a new plaster application is needed. Nasal sutures are removed on the 5th day after surgery.

While most of the swelling will decrease within a few weeks, it may take longer than 6 months for your new nose structure to fully settle. During this time, you may notice gradual changes in the appearance of your nose.

For the post-operative period, your plastic surgeon will tell you how to take care of yourself in the following subjects,

  • How will you care for the surgical site?
  • What medications will you use by mouth or on the skin and mucous membranes and how often to aid healing and reduce the risk of infection?
  • Special recommendations for your new nose and general health; the amount of rest, the way you lie in bed, the frequency of applying ice, … etc.
  • What are the effects of the sun on the surgical field? What will be the sun protection methods?
  • When will you come to your plastic surgeon for a check-up?

What Are The Risks of Rhinoplasty (Rhinoplasty)?

Making the decision to undergo plastic surgery is extremely personal. Some people with a similar nose decide to change the shape of their nose, while others do not think about aesthetic rhinoplasty at all. You must decide whether the result of rhinoplasty will meet your wishes and whether the risks and potential complications of rhinoplasty are acceptable to you.

Your plastic surgeon will explain in detail the risks associated with the surgery. You will be asked to sign consent forms to ensure you fully understand the procedure, risks or potential complications.

Although the complication rates of rhinoplasty surgery are low, the risks can be listed as follows;

  • Risks of anesthesia
  • Infection
  • Wound healing problems
  • Change in skin sensation. It is often felt as numbness. It is usually temporary.
  • The breathing problems you felt before the surgery did not completely go away
  • Skin discoloration
  • Possibility of revision surgery

These risks and others will be fully discussed before your consent. It is important to discuss all your questions directly with your plastic surgeon.

Frequently Asked Questions About Rhinoplasty

The results of aesthetic nose surgery are long-lasting. While most of the swelling will decrease in the first few weeks, it may take up to 6 months, sometimes longer, for your nose shape to settle. During this time, you may notice gradual changes in the appearance of your nose, which turns into a more permanent result.

Each surgeon has a fee to be determined for rhinoplasty. This fee varies depending on the surgeon’s own experience, the geographical location of his office and the hospital where the surgery will take place.

When rhinoplasty is performed to improve respiratory function, the most common cause is an obstructed airway. Only surgical interventions to open the blocked airway are covered by health insurance. However, health insurance does not pay for aesthetic rhinoplasty.
